CALSPro’s Continuing Education Committee assembles seminars for members on complex issues. The Continuing Education Committee administers an examination to qualify members, their employees and independent contractors as certified process servers.

The CCPS Workshop covers such topics as:

  • Tools of the trade
  • What makes a good report
  • The 3 essential elements of service
  • Monetary jurisdictions
  • Venues
  • Statutory time limits
  • The 4 basic ways a Summons and complaint can be served
  • Reasonable diligence
  • The codes every process server should know

Also covered are both State and Federal serves (including witness fees and how to properly calculate them); and explains:

  • Personal service
  • Substituted service
  • Certified mail Service
  • Service by Publication

It also details:

  • The service of ORAPs (a.k.a. OEX’s)
  • Subpoenas
  • Small Claims Actions
  • Writs
  • Unlawful Detainers (including Prejudgment Claims and 3 day notices)

Specific details are also provided which differentiate service on individuals, businesses and corporations. Case law cites and summaries are also included in the materials.

Each Participant receives the CCPS Workshop workbook; which is interactive “fill in the blank” style; Process Service Manual – quick reference guide which contains many often used and referenced CCP and B & P codes and their explanation/interpretations, as well as the case law that is the basis for most of the widely accepted service of process practices today; and a wallet code card which references the codes most pertinent to the server in the field. There are also supplemental materials such as handouts of code sections to supplement the workbook. Those taking the CCPS exam will also receive a 2 sided study guide at the end of the workshop to review before the start of the exam.
